Doctors will collect the sperm from males through normal ejaculation or complex techniques like (TESA) Testicular Sperm Aspiration or (TESE) Testicular Sperm Extraction or (MESA) Micro epididymal sperm aspiration.

Sperm collection in IVF?

The sperm sample is collected through ejaculation or using techniques such as TESA, TESE, and MESA.

 

There is another method known as masturbation or intercourse using a special condom by the clinic, for the successful sperm collection. 

 

It is the crucial one from the starting process of IVF. After the successful collection of healthy sperm,  it should be washed before the treatment. 

How to Get the Best Sperm Sample for IVF

After the collection of the sperm, it will be tested to analyze the semen for the best sample.  Getting the best sample is based on a nutrient diet & lifestyle. The quality of the sample will be tested for the further procedure. 

 

There are some important factor that helps to get the best sperm before IVF:  

 

  • Do follow a healthy diet. 
  • Add more nutritious food contains vitamins C, D, E, Zinc, Omega-3 fatty acids etc.,
  • Do maintain a healthy BMI. 
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking & drugs. 
  • Do regular exercise prescribed by your physician.
  • Avoid physical exposure to chemicals, heavy metals, etc.,

How much sperm is enough for IVF?

Sperm is enough when it attains the success of the healthy sperm needed for the IVF treatment.  The quality is more important than the quantity of the sperm.  Sperm quality, motility, and morphology must be there. 

 

For each cycle to attain 10-15 million sperm, 1 ml is needed.  At least 10 x 10(6)spermatozoa/ml, which is required at least 30% are motile and 15% have motility for IVF.  

 

But, though the level is attained there is a minimum chance of pregnancy.  It requires 20% of spermatozoa for normal morphology.

What are the dos and don'ts for sperm collection?

When the sperm is collected for IVF treatment, one must follow the following measures to avoid unhealthy sperm. 

Dos for sperm collection:

Do follow a healthy diet: 

 

According to the doctor’s advice, take care of your health with a nutritious diet. Maintain hydration, and drink more water and fresh juices.  Foods which is high in Vitamins, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, etc. can be taken.

 

Do follow a healthy lifestyle: 

 

Getting proper sleep, and planning for parenting may help in a healthy lifestyle. 

 

Do Abstain: 

 

Abstain from sexual activity for 2-7 days before the sample collection.  This will help to increase the sperm count and increase concentration in ejaculate.

Don’t consume alcohol: 

 

Avoid alcohol, and smoking before the sample collection. 

 

Don’t Use Lubricants:  

 

It can affect sperm motility, consult this with your doctor. 

 

Don’t Delay transport: 

 

After collecting samples at home, try to reach the hospital/clinic within an hour. 

 

Don’t Expose to Extreme Temperature: 

 

Do keep the sample at room temperature during transport to prevent disqualified sperm.
