Washing sperm is one of the major processes that must be performed in intra-uterine insemination treatment.  

Usually,  washed sperm will live for 6 to 12 hours somehow, it lives as long as 24 hours to 48 hours, after 24 hours sperm quality starts losing its potency. 

During IUI, Sperm is washed to prevent extra fluid, eliminating dead sperms, weak sperms, debris & prostaglandin.  Unwashed sperm can cause cramping and even shock as well. 

The lifespan of Washed Sperm after IUI

Normally,  the lifespan of washed sperm is up to 72 hours, after IUI.  But, after 24 hours sperm can begin to decline.  Sperm can live in a woman’s reproductive and the timing to fertilize an egg takes at least 2-4 days.

 

Depending on the sperm quality,  the time can be evaluated. Healthy sperm can continue beyond the fallopian tube in IUI and it takes time only 6 to 12 hours for the egg’s release in the process of fertilization.

IUI Timing and Egg Release

Sperm is collected after 3-5 days, after abstaining from intercourse.  IUI takes a couple of minutes(2-3 minutes), the process is that the catheter is introduced, then sperm injection, and after 2 minutes the catheter will be removed until the catheter is through the cervix.   

In this process, the catheter is injected through the vagina and uterus.
