PRP procedure in IVF

Topic

In recent decades PRP has become a popular and successful technique in medical treatments. Well, what is PRP? PRP is a medical treatment that uses a patient’s own blood cells to heal specific conditions. Interesting, right!

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a component of concentrated blood that contains more platelets than normal. This PRP has clotting abilities and it also helps in regenerating cell reproduction and tissue growth.

In In-Vitro Fertilization PRP has been used for its various advantages and effectiveness. This procedure is used to improve egg quality, thin endometrium and for the healing process. In this blog, let’s evaluate the uses and effectiveness of PRP in IVF.

How is PRP prepared?

PRP is prepared by using the patient’s own blood sample. Once the blood is injected out from the patient it is placed in a device called ‘centrifuge’ which spins quickly. By a rapid spin, the collected blood separates out the other different components of the blood. Now, the plasma is collected which is rich in platelets.

Once the PRP is ready and activated, it is taken out for further treatments.

How is PRP used for IVF and other fertility Treatments?

PRP is a trustworthy medical technique that is used in various fertility treatments when the patient can’t get pregnant naturally. PRP is used in the treatment of IUI and IVF. Both IUI and IVF is an artificial fertility treatment in which sperm is injected directly into the uterus and egg stimulation and lab fertilization is done.

PRP helps in improving the quality and quantity of eggs. It can enhance endometrial receptivity during an embryo transfer. PRP is highly recommended to the patient who has undergone multiple IVF cycles with a record of RIF (Recurrent Implantation Failure) which did not result in pregnancy despite the high-quality embryos being transferred multiple times.

PRP for Egg Quantity & Quality:

PRP is used to stimulate the quality of egg, ovarian rejuvenation, and further medications. PRP is used to improve oocyte quality and quantity. This procedure is done with two methods, they are Intraovarian PRP and High Volume Intrauterine PRP.

Intraovarian PRP: In Intraovarian PRP, 1 to 3mls of PRP is injected directly into the ovaries. It is done and monitored under anesthesia. Here, a needle with PRP is injected into the vaginal wall and into the ovaries through an ultrasound. Inside the ovaries PRP is deposited. This must be done two or three months prior to IVF stimulation.

High Volume Intrauterine PRP: In high volume Intrauterine PRP procedure, 8 to 10 mls of PRP is injected into the uterus by using a SHG catheter which helps to evaluate the uterus and the shape of uterine cavity. Once PRP is injected into the uterus, the plasma will flow out of the uterus through fallopian tubes and glide over the ovaries and immerse them in the plasma.

PRP for Uterine Lining Growth & Endometrial Receptivity (PRP Intrauterine Wash):

In this process, 3 to 5mls of PRP is infused in the uterus using an IUL catheter. By doing so, it can enhance the endometrial receptivity of the uterine lining prior to an embryo transfer. It should be done 48 hours prior before embryo transfer. The uterine wash is performed to the patient who has a history of failure to develop uterine lining.

Cost of PRP for IVF:

The cost of PRP for IVF varies according to the treatments and conditions of the patient. However, the cost might range from $300 – $1600.

Can You Get Pregnant After PRP?

Though PRP helps in getting pregnant, it is also important to analyze some factors like sperm, egg, embryo and endometrial thickness. If everything is perfect, then there are more and higher chances of getting pregnant after PRP treatment. Trust the process and follow your doctor’s guidance.

Conclusion

Technology has developed in a wide range which aids in fulfilling everybody’s deficiencies. When it comes to PRP, it has many advantages especially in the fertility treatment.

Thus, have a good discussion with your doctor about the treatment and how it works on you. PRP is done all over the fertility clinics and it is accessible world-wide. Happy Parenthood!
